1st Lieutenant Walter Bender
Son of John H. and Mary Bender, born at Lanark, Illinois March 25, 1886; volunteered for service in the Regular Army March 18, 1902, served in the Infantry and Cavalry and Military Instructor at Harvard University; served overseas 26 months, made Commander of 5th Aero Squadron and is an American Ace, having official credit of bringing down 7 German planes, in the Chateau Thierry, Cantigny and Meuse-Argonne battles. Decorated with Croix de Guerre and received shrapnel wound in Air battle in Meuse Argonne.
Musician George Elliott Hammond
Son of Charles B. and Agnes S. Hammond, born at Lanark, Illinois June 21, 1896; volunteered for service in the U. S. Navy at Chicago, Illinois, May 26, 1918.
Sergeant Llewelyn John Hartman
Son of Louis and Matie Hartman, born at Chicago, Illinois November 26th , 1895; inducted for service at Lanark, Illinois September 18, 1917; served overseas 16 months in Co. A. 342 Infantry and Co. K. 58th Infantry, participating in the following engagements: Aisne-Marne, Vesle River, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. Transport on which Sgt. Hartman went overseas torpedoed May 23rd, 1918. Decorated with Croix de Guerre. Served in Army of Occupation at Coblenz, Germany.
Corporal Harold Howard Horner
Son of Fred L. and Minerva Horner, born at Lanark, Illinois April 8, 1895; inducted for service September 19, 1917; served overseas 17 months with A. Co. 59th Infantry, 4th Division, also Pershing 3rd Army Composite Regiment; participated in 2nd Battle of the Marne, Aisne-Marne Offensive, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. Served in Army of Occupation at Ernst, Konigsfeldt, Mallandar, Arweiller and Coblenz, Germany.
Private Robert R. Horner
Son of Fred L. and Minerva M. Horner, born at Lanark, Illinois September 2, 1900; volunteered for service May 3, 1918 at Chicago, Illinois; served with Battery F, 9th Field Artillery, Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.
Private John Philo Mahood
Son of Mrs. S. L. Mahood, born at Mt. Carroll, June 1899. Volunteered at Jefferson Barracks, MO., March 15, 1918. Served in Co. B., 4th U. S. Infantry, 3rd Division at battles of Chateau-Thierry, Meuse-Argonne, and St. Mihiel. Killed in action October 14, 1918 in Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
Fireman 1CL Harvey Kyle Eyler
Son of Charles M. and Lillian E. Eyler, born at Mt. Carroll, Illinois May 26, 1896; volunteered for service at Des Moines, Iowa in June, 1917; in several engagements with submarines, serving on board the U. S. S. Mt. Vernon from September 9, 1917 to May 6, 1918; U. S. S. Bill, a destroyer, from July 15, 1918 to September 4, 1919. Had 5 months convoy duty.
Private Lee. D. Hannes
Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hannes, born at Mt. Carroll, Illinois May 16, 1896; inducted for service at Mt. Carroll, Illinois April 1, 1918, serving overseas 12 months with 1st Army Ordnance Detachment in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives.
Cadet Theodore Miles
Son of Joseph S. Miles, born at Mt. Carroll, Illinois November 13, 1895; volunteered for service at Chicago, Illinois January 26, 1918. Served in the Aviation as Cadet Flyer. Prior to Mr. Miles enlistment in the American Army he served 6 months overseas in 1917 with the American Field Service as an ambulance driver. Mr. Miles was decorated with the Croix de Guerre by the French Government during his service with the French in 1917.
Private Carol E. Myers
Son of Mrs. Izora Myers, inducted for service April 29, 1918; served overseas 8 months with headquarters Co. 34th Infantry, 4th Division, participating in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, where he was gassed and wounded 3 times October 29, 1918 and taken to the Field Hospital, thence to Toul, Angers, Base Hospital No. 27, Base 85, to Savanny, and then to Brest for transportation to the U. S. where he landed March 19, 1919 and was taken to Greenhut Hospital, N. Y., to Marine Hospital, Chicago and then to Camp Grant Hospital, Rockford, where he was discharged April 5, 1919.
Private Theodore Winter Reedy
Son of Mr. and Mrs. George L. Reedy, born at Mt. Carroll, Illinois October 20, 1897; volunteered for service June 8, 1917 at Paris Island, South Carolina, served overseas 12 months with 78th Co. 6th Regiment Marines. Served in the trenches from March 17, 1918 in Mont, Mesnil, Haudemont, Ronvaux, etc. and in Belleau Woods from June 1st, in twelve different advances, until June 14, 1918. Slightly wounded at Ronvaux in April and gassed in Belleau Wood June 14, and never returned to the front. Croix de Guerre.
Glenn S. Wise
Son of Henry S. and Ida. M. Wise, born at Mt. Carroll, Illinois March 26, 1897; volunteered for service at Portland, Oregon November 29, 1916; served one year as a Musician and one year in electrical School at Naval Training Station, Mare Island, California. Made four trips across the Atlantic on the transport Santa Anna and four on the transport George Washington. Also on the Mine Sweeper U. S. S. Quail in Southern Waters.
Private 1CL Paul Daniel Burns
Son of Daniel L. Burns, Sr. born at Savanna, Illinois January 5, 1898; volunteered for service at La Crosse, Wisconsin January 21, 1918; served 14 months overseas with 1st Balloon Co., participating in battles on Badonville Sector, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne. Served in the Army of Occupation at Niederberg, Germany.
Sergeant Robert W. Elder
Son of Mary J. Elder, was born at Shannon, Illinois May 1893; volunteered for service April 3, 1915 at Jefferson Barracks, Mo.; served overseas 14 months with Co. A. and G, 58th Infantry and participated in the following engagements: Aisne-Marne, Vesle River, Toulon Sector, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne. Served in Army of Occupation at Coblenz, Germany. Was wounded and gassed and received the Croix de Guerre for bravery in action.
1st Sergeant John Walter Marsh
Son of Mrs. Ida E. Anderson, was born at Lanark, Illinois in August 1895; inducted into service at Sidney, Montana October 4, 1917; served overseas 9 months with Co. K. 362nd Infantry; participated in the Flanders, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne Offensives; received Distinguished Service Cross and Croix de Guerre; also being wounded.
Captain Glenn W. Dresbach
Son of William H. and Belle M. Dresbach, born in Salem Township, Illinois September 9, 1889; volunteered for service September 9, 1917, at Deming, Camp Code, New Mexico. Served with Medical Supply Depot.
Private Peter M. Hansen
Son of Mrs. Andrew Sandholt of Savanna, born at Savanna, November 11, 1895. Volunteered for service March 29, 1918 at Camp Grant, Illinois. Served in 356th Infantry, 89th Division, taking part in the offensive at St. Mihiel and in the Argonne, and was killed in action near Hoopice, France November 11, 1918.
Lieutenant Allen D. Shaw
Son of George and Clara Shaw, born at Dubuque, Iowa November 17, 1883. Volunteered for service at St. Paul, Minn. October 23, 1917. Served with Russian Railway Detachment, arriving in December 25, 1917. Died on U. S. S. Sheridan while enroute to America.
Coxswain Charles Leslie Kling
Son of Harry Evans and Camilla Kling, born at Mt. Carroll, Illinois July 7th , 1901, volunteered for service at Chicago, Illinois May 23, 1917; was engaged nearly 18 months in convoy duty in the Mediterranean and North Seas, base at Rock of Gibraltar.
C. W. Nellis
Served with the Signal Corps as U. S, Inspector of Air planes and Engines at Detroit, Michigan. Entered the service May 1918 and served until August 1919. Mr. Nellis was beyond the age limit but his knowledge and experience was so necessary to the government that special provision was made in his case.
Lieutenant Harry H. Strauch
Son of Anthony and Katherine Strauch, born at Thomson, Illinois March 11, 1892. Volunteered May 20, 1917 for service with 11th Aero Squadron, Signal Reserve Corps. Landed in France September 16, 1917, killed in action September 18, 1918. Decorated for exceptional bravery, with Croix de Guerre by French Government.
Corporal Eugene Weatherall
Son of J. H. Weatherall, born at Pontotoc, Mississippi March 13, 1896; inducted for service at Savanna, Illinois August 1, 1918; served overseas 10 months with 803rd Infantry. Participated in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
Private 1CL Joseph Weatherall
Son of Allen Weatherall, born at Ecra, Mississippi July 12, 1895. Inducted into the service at Camp Grant, Illinois October 28, 1917. Served with the 365th Infantry. Overseas 8 months.
Nurse Bertha Mary Alexander
Daughter of Cyrus Hall Alexander and Ellen Maude Livingstone of Thomson, Ill., born at Thomson, Ill. Volunteered for service in the American Red Cross May 16, 1917 at Chicago, Ill. Served in U. S. A. Base Hospital No. 12. Overseas service two years. At present living in Harlowton, Montana.
