The Great War Society encourages all interested in travelling to World War I battlefields to enhance their understanding of the tremendous difficulties they presented to the troops, the officers and planning staffs and the public's understanding of the war. However, The Great War Society is not associated with any of the tour operators and does not endorse any particular tour operator or any particular excursion.

Itinerary - All the Major Battlefields will be visited, including the Ypres Salient, Vimy Ridge, the Somme, the Marne, Chemin des Dames, Champagne, the Argonne Forest, Verdun & the St. Mihiel Salient.
In addition we will be making a concerted effort to honor the 90th Anniversary of America's Military Participation in the War. We will be participating in Memorial Day Ceremonies at the Belleau Wood and Oise-Aisne U.S. cemeteries, visiting all the American battlefields, and experiencing the sites where American Legends were born: the Lost Battalion, Alvin York, George Patton's first tank attack, the US Marine "Devil Dogs", the "Fighting 69th" at the River Ourcq, the 28th "Bloody Bucket" Division of Pennsylvania, the 3rd Division "Rock of the Marne", the St. Quentin Canal captured by the National Guardsmen of New York, Carolina and Tennessee, and the First AEF attack at Cantigny and the last, the crossing of the River Meuse, November 10th-11th 1918.

2008 Walking American and German Battlefields
Tour Guides Randy Gaulke and Markus Klauer (from Germany) are offering a five-day, small-group (12 max.) Walking-Oriented Tour in August 2008. The tour will spend three days in the Meuse-Argonne sector, one day in the St. Mihiel Salient and one day touring the Verdun battlefields. The tour will look at both the American and the German sides of the conflict; and it will involve significant walks-making this format somewhat unique. This trip allows an in-depth look at three of the greatest battlefields of the First World War--one each from the start, middle years and end--will be visited. Tour members will be able to see the terrain and how weapons, tactics and strategy evolved through the war. (See flyer.)
The focused program begins just northeast of Paris for a monumental reenactment of the opening of the First Battle of the Marne, arguably the war's most important battle. Additional major stops include a reconnaisance of the tragic Somme Battlefields of Picardy, the key points of 1918's Second Battle of the Marne and concludes with a visit to the Armistice Glade at Compiegne.
