Audio Information and Software

I have chosen to record sound using the GSM 6,10 standard. It offers the best compression and only a little loss of quality. Let's face it, these tunes are off an old Victrola and nothing is going to make them CD quality. Besides, this is probably close to what they sounded like way back when.

Please take a minute to read this section since your computer may not be able to play these GSM formatted audio files. You have several options:

  1. If you are running Windows NT or Win95 and have configured your browser to use the delivered media player, you will probably be able to download and play the files without a problem.Give it a try by hitting the download link on one of the selections below. If that does not work, you should try option 2 or 3.

  2. An even better option is to get a player capable of streaming the audio file and playing it realtime. This means you don't have to wait for the file to download. Even the largest files begin playing right away! You can get one for free (for either Windows 3.x or Windows NT/95) at: ø DirectAudio Player V2.0. You must have at least a 14.4 kbps modem to use this option. Be sure to read and follow the installation instructions, especially how to tell your browser to use DAP for *.gsd files. If you have installed this software, you can click on the streamed option below.

  3. If you are running Windows 3.x, and are interested in downloading and playing these files, you will need a GSM capable media player. You can get one at: ø Cool Edit 1.53 for Windows 3.1x. If you have gone this route, click on the download option below to listen. (Many thanks to Barry Brotherton (barry.brotherto@geo2.poptel.org.uk) for the information on Cool Edit.)

  4. As of 20-Sep-1997, I have begun encoding certain selections using RealAudio. It's one thing to encode scratchy old recordings in GSM, but newer recordings suffer too much from this compression. I hear that RealAudio will be built into most web browsers in the near future as the standard for internet audio playback. In time, I'll be converting all of these files over to this great new format. If your broswer is not RA enabled, take a few minutes to download the player at:

    http://www.realaudio.com/hpproducts/player/index.html.

Trust me, it's a plugin from which you'll get a lot of use .

Note  1
These musical selections are taken from Mark Best's WWI Songs collection on cassette tape. If you're interested, please see Mark's entry on the Notice Board page. The tapes sound much better than the compressed WAV files presented here. Click here to visit Mark's updated web site for many more WWI selections in RealAudio format. Mark now offers his 2 and 10 tape sets on CD and also provides secure online ordering.

Note  2
These musical selections were contributed by Ian Cooper. Ian deals in WWI militaria (soldier's personal items) and also has an entry on the Notice Board page.
